Pathfinder Services, Inc. began children’s services through preschool for special needs children in 1973. Pathfinder Services Inc. then began an early Intervention program for special needs children, ages newborn through two years in 1980. In the late 1980’s two key studies were conducted in Huntington County that indicated a clear demand for a children’s center. In the Community Needs Assessment Study, 25 percent of those who use childcare for children under the age of 10 said they were interested in a licensed facility. In another study conducted by Pathfinder Services Inc. through Ball State University, they found that 40 percent of those interviewed experienced some degree of difficulty in making child care arrangements. Other statistical analysis revealed the demand for childcare was strong in Huntington County. Pathfinder Services Inc. felt the need of the community and in 1984 began negotiations with Huntington College to provide the land for the children’s center and in 1988 a land lease was signed. In 1990 Kids Kampus became the first licensed childcare center in Huntington County. Kids Kampus offers quality childcare for approximately 120 children, including special services for disabled children, special pricing for low-income families and special programming to enhance the quality of parenting in Huntington County and the surrounding areas. Since constructing the facility in 1990, Kids Kampus has partnered with Parkview Huntington Hospital to offer a Kids Klinic for sick children whose parents have to report to work. Another significant business partner has been Bendix Corporation, who since 1992 has worked with Kids Kampus to offer a co-op scholarship program. In 1996, Kids Kampus achieved an important milestone as it received its accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Playgroup was introduced in 1999, as a program to integrate typical and special needs children from ages 24 to 36 months. This unique program design provided an enriching experience for everyone involved. |
